EU regulation

Chemicals, REACH and certifications

Restricted substances in textiles and what common certifications actually mean.

REACH (mandatory)

  • The EU REACH Regulation restricts hazardous substances in textiles, such as certain azo dyes, nickel in metal parts and some carcinogenic substances.
  • The brand placing the product on the market is responsible, even if production happens elsewhere.
  • Ask suppliers for test reports or declarations of compliance.

Voluntary certifications

  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: the finished product is tested for harmful substances.
  • GOTS: organic fibres and environmental and social criteria across the supply chain.
  • GRS / RCS: verifies recycled content.
  • Fair Trade: social and economic standards for producers.

Using certifications in marketing

You may only claim a certification if your specific product or supplier is certified and you can show the certificate. Using a logo without a valid licence is not allowed.
