From idea to first production run

The stages every new clothing brand goes through, and what to prepare at each one.

1. Concept and positioning

  • Define your customer, price point and the few products you will launch with.
  • Collect references: sketches, photos and garments you like the fit of.
  • Set a target retail price early — it determines fabric, construction and factory choices.

2. Tech pack

  • Describe the garment: flats, materials, trims, construction, labels and a size chart.
  • Mark anything you have not decided yet as open rather than guessing.
  • A clear tech pack is what lets a factory quote accurately.

3. Prototype and fit sample

  • Expect at least one revision round; fit is rarely right the first time.
  • Test the sample on a real person in your base size, then wash it.

4. Pre-production sample

The final sample in the correct fabric, colours and trims. Once approved, it becomes the reference the bulk order is checked against.

5. Bulk production and quality control

  • Confirm quantities per size and colour, delivery date and payment terms in writing.
  • Agree how quality is checked and what tolerance is acceptable.

6. Delivery and launch

Plan labels, packaging and shipping before production ends, so goods can go straight to sale.
